1 Core Balancing Cat

A Core Activator From All Fours

Get that core activating! When you think about your core, movements like sit-ups might spring to mind.  However, they have limited value on their own.

Balancing practices like standing work and this core balancing cat naturally activate your core muscles.  Everyone has core muscles and you don’t have to have a flat tummy to have a strong core.  This is a myth so you can let go of that goal right now!

Improving Your Balance

What is important is putting the body into positions where the core naturally engages and is forced to work to stop you from overbalancing, just like this sequence. You don’t have to activate the core consciously, it will do its magic in the background if you give it the opportunity. The more you practice, the easier it will be. Your balance will improve over time as you go. You may like to do a warm-up of the spine first with our cat stretch video since you are down here on all fours anyway.

2 Back Stretches Spine Salute

A Simple Standing Sequence

I love this simple spine mobilising sequence that anyone can do anytime during the day. If you don’t have time to lie down and do back stretches on the floor, then this is perfect for you!

It gently takes your spine through all its planes of movement; forward and backward bending (flexion/extension), twisting and side bending (lateral) in each direction. In the morning it will get your whole body moving gently. In the evening, it will stretch into areas that may have tightened during repetitive activities during the day.

All of this whilst tuning into the breath to make it a mini moving meditation. You don’t need a yoga mat and it’s all standing so could even be used at work. No excuses to be found here!

This sequence is loosely based on something I came across years ago named the Egyptian salute to the sun. I’m not sure who to credit it to but I love it and I’m sure you will too. I hope you find this useful to keep you moving and meditating with ease.

3 Chair Cat Stretch

Spine mobiliser on a chair

A seated variation of a yoga staple, the cat & cow flow but on a chair! This chair cat stretch makes it accessible for anyone who can’t be on their knees on all fours. You can still enjoy the benefits of moving the spine through flexion (forward bending) and extension (backward bending) all from the comfort of a chair. If you’re sitting right now, give it a go because everyone can benefit from this!

Flowing with the breath helps to keep you focused, more aware of the subtle movement of the vertebrae, and slows things down.

You can do it without moving your arms if you are in a public place or at your desk at work, unless you like drawing attention to yourself, in which case, go right ahead my friend! I’ve included 3 variations here so try them all, mix them around and let me know how you like them.

If you’d like to try the more classic version on the ground and can easily kneel then follow this link to this cat stretch video >>

4 Neck Stretch Side Bend

A Gentle Stretch For On The Go

If you get a tight neck or upper shoulders, then you will LOVE this gentle neck stretch. It can be done sitting or standing, whatever suits you in the moment so you can be a bit spontaneous! Be mindful not to pull on the head as you do it, the hand is there as a guide only.

Take the head to a natural stopping point that feels right for you and don’t force anything. It’s better to be gentle and allow the neck muscles to relax naturally.

If you pull, the opposite will happen and the muscles will tighten up instead! This is a protective mechanism. Better, longer-lasting results can be achieved by taking a slower gentle approach to stretching.

Pause for 6 x cycles of natural breath on each side. That should take around 60 seconds but it can be held longer if time permits. Focus on what you can feel and not on pushing to go further, relax instead.

Try this every day this week or multiple times a day is even better if you tend to get tight around this area. Buddying this up with a spine mobilizing practice like the cat stretch will give you even better results. Getting the rest of the spine moving will integrate any changes that you’ve made. Any mindful movement is better than none so take the little wins if you can only put aside a minute or two to practice.

See if you notice any difference in how your neck and shoulders feel at the end of the week. If you’d like to see more easy neck stretches, sign up for the complete series, and follow along with the series and on our social pages.

Let me know how you go!

About The Free Online Yoga Collection

There is loads of free online yoga around but we wanted to create something different.  Something anyone can do with minimal time on their hands, no yoga experience, and no fancy yoga equipment.  And so, yoga in 60 seconds the online yoga video series was born! I’ve been teaching yoga in shared spaces and hospitals in Applecross, Bateman and Fremantle areas in Western Australia for two decades.  I’m a yoga therapist certified at the highest level currently available internationally with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). Specialising in working with people who have chronic conditions, pain, injuries, or ageing bodies.

I know what people struggle with in both starting a yoga practice and continuing on with it.    Time is a BIG factor.    It’s my hope that these short practices will encourage you to do a little more home practice.  Even if it is just a minute, it sets up a great habit!  Doing a little often really is where the magic happens in yoga.
