With experienced yoga therapist Charley Hickey, C-IAYT
Yoga Therapy Explained
“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga” – International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) definition.
It is usually delivered in either a private one-on-one or small group session. Yoga therapy can adapt the practice of yoga to the needs of people with specific or persistent health problems not usually addressed in a group class.
How We Can Help You
No yoga experience is needed to benefit from yoga therapy. It can assist in a wide range of circumstances. Some common examples include:
Recovery from injury
Recent health diagnoses e.g arthritis
Wellness during ongoing illness
Chronic/persistent pain
Private introduction to yoga
Gentle movement after a period of inactivity
Stress management through mindfulness
Boost confidence & motivation
Private Sessions
A yoga therapist assists the person rather than focusing on the condition. To do that, they use a combination of techniques including:
- Yoga poses
- Breathing techniques
- Meditation
- Lifestyle counselling
- Self-development guidance
Each person receives an assessment and then a tailored practice based on their own needs. Yoga therapy is not just a short-term treatment but a long-term lifestyle option. It develops self-awareness & empowerment to promote lasting change.
After an assessment, you will be given a personalised plan to practice at home. Most people come for a few appointments and then continue in their own time. Many feel confident to join one of our friendly group classes.
Our yoga therapists work with other health professionals and have a local network to refer on to.
What Our Lovely Clients Have to Say
Finding A Yoga Therapist
Yoga therapy is an emerging profession that is backed by a growing evidence base of research. A yoga therapist is an experienced yoga teacher with extra training. This includes biomedical science and assessment skills. Yoga therapists certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) have achieved the highest level of certification currently available worldwide. Our principal yoga therapist, Charley Hickey and all yoga therapists here at Charleyoga hold the C-IAYT designation.
