Charley Hickey C-IAYT
I enjoy sharing yoga with others so much that I feel a little bit guilty calling it ‘work’! I’m very blessed to have such a good work/life balance.
My yoga journey began at the tender age of 11 suffering from insomnia, chronic migraines and anxiety. I found that there wasn’t much practical help available from the family doctor so I started to research things myself and hit the local library. It was here that I discovered books about meditation and breathing. Over the years I practiced these techniques and they helped me to come back into balance, always working from where I was at. This self-discovery was a powerful realisation and from that point on yoga became a part of my life. The physical side came later for me which is a bit of backwards journey. Most students usually begin for the physical benefits and discover meditation later.
A few years after I moved to Perth, a work colleague asked me if I was a yoga teacher as I was often rushing to yoga after work. It was a “lightbulb” moment for me. How could I have not seen this before?! I left my job and haven’t looked back, that was almost 20 years ago!
As a mother of two boys and more recently a grandmother. I understand firsthand what it’s like to juggle the many different balls that life throws at you. Whatever your stage of life, it’s easy to get out of balance but yoga can help you to rediscover this balance and reconnect with who you are.
I enjoy all that yoga has to offer but really, the deepest changes happen at the layer of the mind and the way I teach reflects this with a big emphasis on mindful movement along with breath awareness. If you only want to build fitness then go to a fitness class; if you want to also build resilience in your central nervous system then come to my yoga classes!
